Movement Laboratory

‘Movement Laboratory’ was born in 2022 in Amsterdam. It is a space dedicated to the practice and study of improvisation and composition.

During the practice sessions we aim to cultivate an environment of playfullness. We explore the response of the body to movement, music, others and space.
We begin with the fundamental act of composing through walking, focusing on the subtle rhythms, pacing, and connections that emerge from simplicity. From there, we gradually progress into risk-taking.
Through games and group exercises we study: spatial awareness, music interpretation, dramaturgy and storytelling, group dynamics and stage presence.
Each session culminates with the real-time composition of a piece.

NEXT OPEN SESSIONS: OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2025

Since 2024, Movement Laboratory holds performances where the dancers are challenged to compose pieces in real time. The last of these, ‘Tempest’, has been supported by Amsterdam Fonds Voor de Kunst.
